CCPA's October 2023 order records misleading UPSC success advertising by Unacademy and a ₹1 lakh penalty; a later press report says the consumer disputes commission stayed the fine, so the file notes the dispute rather than treating the matter as uncontested. Separately, Unacademy's online subscription policy is non-refundable, and its UPSC offline policy closes the ordinary refund window after seven days from batch commencement.
The arithmetic
Every point, and why
Everything starts at 100. Below is every point we cut, the rule that caused it, and the document it came from. None of it is our opinion.

CCPA order records misleading UPSC success claims and a ₹1 lakh penalty
The CCPA order records claims such as “26% of all UPSC rankers are Unacademy learners” and “178+ achievers out of 685”, and finds that material course information about the successful candidates was not disclosed. A later press report says NCDRC stayed the fine; no final setting-aside order is on file here, so the regulatory findings are listed with that caveat.

What the rule for a coaching institute says
If you paid the full fee and leave the course midway, they must refund the fee for the remaining period within 10 days. That includes hostel and mess fees, if you paid them.

These are national guidelines that states are asked to adopt. They are not a criminal law on their own. The route that actually works for one student is the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 — poor service and unfair trade practice — through the helpline and the consumer commissions.
